College Hockey Recruits Getting Younger

This week, rumor spread of a barely 14 year-old Norwegian hockey player accepting a scholarship offer from Denver University. This turns out not to have been true. But even if it had been, it would not have set any records for the youngest college hockey commitment. That honor goes to Oliver Wahlstrom who committed to Maine as a 13 year-old 7th grader earlier this year.

The debate over recruiting children more than four years removed from college will continue as long as loopholes in NCAA rules permit the practice. The phenomenon certainly isn't limited to college hockey either. In fact, all scholarship sponsored college athletic programs (women's and men's) have been known to recruit a youngster here and there. Football's youngest commitment was also 13. Women's soccer has offered 13-year-old players too.

I'll stay out of the debate but still provide the data. Based on information from Chris Heisenberg's current and past recruit lists, below are the thirteen youngest players to have accepted a men's D1 college hockey scholarship offer. Based on available data, this list should include every commitment made by a player under the age of fifteen.

Oliver Wahlstrom - 13y/6m/28d - Maine
Cam Askew - 14y/6m/5d - Boston University
Connor Anthoine - 14y/6m/7d - Vermont
Liam Pecararo - 14y/7m/8d - Maine
Cayden Primeau - 14y/7m/19d - Northeastern
Jon Merrill - 14y/8m/7d - Michigan
Noah Hanafin - 14y/9m/0d - Boston College
Mikey Anderson - 14y/9m/12d - Minnesota-Duluth
Brannon McManus - 14y/9m/22d - Minnesota
Keith Petruzzelli - 14y/10m/8d - Quinnipiac
Casey Fitzgerald - 14/10m/29d - Boston College
Joey Anderson - 14y/11m/7d - Minnesota-Duluth
Mark Friedman - 14y/11m/13d - Bowling Green

Thus far, only one player on this list (Jon Merrill) has actually played D1 college hockey. Cam Askew opted to play in the QMJHL. Connor Anthoine ended up playing D3 hockey instead. The rest are still in committed to their respective programs.

Central Scouting 2014 NHL Draft Preliminary Watch List

Here's the latest from Central Scouting. There are no uncommitted "A" rated players, but I've listed the uncommitted "B" rated players below. There are too many uncommitted "C" rated players to list, but I encourage you to scope them out.

Alex Rodriguez - LW/RW - Shattuck-St. Mary's Prep
Alexander Falconer - C - Shattuck-St. Mary's Prep
Blake Weyrick - G - USA U-18
Chase Perry - G - Wenatchee
Jack Dougherty - D - USA U-18
Lawton Courtnall - LW - Waterloo
Ryan Donato - C/LW - Dexter School
Tyler Nanne - D - Edina
Tyler Sheehy - RW - Burnsville

Recruiting Links Updated

Most of the recruiting links to the right have been update. MN High Schools point to the Elite League stats until the regular season starts. Shattuck does not have regular season stats yet.

On a side note, let me know if there is a league with a stats page that you'd like added to the list. I believe the links that I have now cover about 98% of all the D1 prospects and committed recruits, but with the rearranging of leagues (particularly on the east coast), I may have missed a slightly important league or two.

2013 NHL Draft College Prospects

Its not unusual for every NHL drafted, college eligible player to have a commitment in hand.  However, a day after the 2013 draft, there is one player who knows where he'll be playing in the NHL before he even knows where he'll be playing in college.

F - Avery Peterson - Grand Rapids HS

Avery skated 8 games with Sioux City of the USHL last season, but he played most of the season as a junior at Grand Rapids.  He could play his senior season for the Thunderhawks if he chooses.  Either way, he will be a highly sought after recruit for the 2013-2014 season.

EDIT: Even though he wasn't selected in the 2013 draft, it turns out there is one more drafted player who isn't currently committed. Defenseman Cliff Watson played for Sioux City of the USHL the past two seasons after being drafted in 2012, but he recently decommitted from Ohio State after the departure of head coach Mark Osiecki. We have no information regarding Cliff's plans for the 2013-2014 season, but he should be more than ready to step onto a D1 roster and contribute immediately.
